The oldest evidence dates back to 1591. The Springbank distillery consists not only of the original building from 1828, but also parts of the former distilleries Longrow, Rieclachen, Union, Springside, and Argyll. It is one of the few distilleries in Scotland that is still run by the original family (Mitchell). The current owner, Mr. Hedley G. Wright, is a direct descendant of the Mitchell family.
