Hendrick's Gin: The Floral Masterpiece from Scotland's Hendrick’s Gin Palace
The Hendrick's Gin Small Batch Handcrafted is far more than just another spirit; it is the pioneer that largely ushered in the gin renaissance in the early 21st century. While classic brands focused on the dominance of juniper, Hendrick's took a radical step in 1999: the introduction of an entirely new dimension of flavor through the essence of cucumber and Bulgarian rose petals. Distilled in small batches in the picturesque coastal town of Girvan, Scotland, this gin has since established itself as a synonym for extravagance and "Curiosity."
Classified as a Distilled Gin, Hendrick's breaks with the rigid dogma of London Dry Gin, allowing for precise post-distillation flavoring that gives it its distinctive floral and fresh profile.
Sensory & Flavor Profile – An Olfactory Journey
Color: Crystal Clear Purity
Despite the addition of floral essences, Hendrick's Gin presents itself in the glass as absolutely crystal clear and pure. It shows a medium viscosity, with fine "tears" forming on the rim of the glass when swirled, indicating artisanal distillation and a solid alcohol content of 44% vol.
Nose (Nosing): A Garden in a Glass
The first wave upon nosing is surprisingly gentle. Juniper is present, but not aggressive. It acts more like a green, pine-like base on which the true stars unfold: a distinct, cool freshness reminiscent of freshly sliced cucumber, paired with the enchanting yet subtle scent of Bulgarian roses. In the background, bright citrus notes and a hint of spicy coriander resonate.
Mouthfeel: Oily Elegance
Hendrick's is characterized by a remarkably silky and oily mouthfeel. The alcohol is exceptionally well integrated; despite the 44% vol, there is hardly any burning sensation, but rather a pleasant warmth that caresses the palate.
Taste (Palate): The Perfect Balance
The complexity is confirmed on the palate. The interplay between the classic bitterness of juniper and the unusual freshness of cucumber is masterfully executed. The floral notes of rose give the gin an aristocratic depth without making it appear "perfumed." A subtle spice from angelica root and caraway provides an earthy foundation that perfectly grounds the fleeting floral aromas.
Finish: Long-lasting and Refreshing
The finish is remarkably clean and persistent. A cool freshness lingers on the palate, flanked by a slight citrus note and a hint of black pepper. The finish is dry, but the cucumber notes immediately encourage the next sip.
The Recipe – The Secret of the Botanicals
The Botanical List: Eleven Plus Two
Hendrick's is based on a core blend of eleven classic botanicals that release their aroma during distillation:
-
Juniper Berries: The backbone of any gin recipe.
-
Coriander Seeds: For citrusy and spicy notes.
-
Angelica Root: Acts as a fixative and adds earthy tones.
-
Lemon Peel & Orange Peel: For bright, zesty top notes.
-
Orris Root (Iris): Imparts a floral structure.
-
Cubeb Pepper: Adds a subtle, peppery sharpness to the finish.
-
Caraway, Elderflower, Chamomile & Yarrow: Complement the complex, herbaceous-floral structure.
However, the real secret lies in the "Signature Essences", which are only added after distillation: the infusion of the finest Bulgarian Damask Rose and carefully selected Dutch cucumbers. This combination gives Hendrick's its unique market position.
Distillation & Craftsmanship – The Symbiosis of Two Stills
The heart of the production is the use of two completely different stills, whose distillates are only married at the end:
1. The Bennett Still (Copper Pot Still from 1860)
This is a classic pot still. Here, the botanicals are macerated (steeped) overnight in neutral alcohol. The result is a very heavy, oily, and intensely aromatic distillate with a deep juniper note.
2. The Carter-Head Still (from 1948)
Here, the botanicals are placed in an aroma basket in the neck of the still. The alcohol vapor rises through the basket (vapor infusion). This method is much gentler and extracts only the lightest, most floral, and finest aromas.
Small Batch & Blending
Master Distiller Lesley Gracie oversees the blending of these two fundamentally different distillates. Only through the combination of the heavy "Bennett" notes and the ethereal "Carter-Head" vapors does Hendrick's unique texture emerge. Since the gin is produced in batches of only about 500 liters, maximum quality control is ensured.
Reviews & Reputation
Hendrick's Gin is globally recognized as one of the best-rated gins and is an integral part of every Premium Gin Test.
-
San Francisco World Spirits Competition: Multiple Double Gold and Gold awards.
-
The Wall Street Journal: Once referred to Hendrick's as the "Best Gin in the World."
-
Falstaff Spirits Gala: Regular top rankings in the "Gin & Tonic" category with 90+ points (falstaff.com).
-
Wine Enthusiast: Consistently rates the gin highly for its innovative structure.
The Perfect Serve – Mixology & Enjoyment
The Ultimate Gin & Tonic
Hendrick's calls for a companion that enhances its floral notes rather than overshadowing them.
-
Tonic Water: A classic Indian Tonic Water (e.g., Fever-Tree) or a light Elderflower Tonic.
-
Garnish: An absolute must is a thin slice of fresh cucumber. It acts as an enhancer for the cucumber essence contained in the gin. Avoid lemon, as the acidity can suppress the delicate rose notes.
Cocktails
-
Hendrick's Gin Basil Smash: The herbaceous note of basil harmonizes excellently with the fresh cucumber.
-
Martini: A "Wet Martini" with a hint of Lillet Blanc instead of dry vermouth emphasizes the floral elegance.
Neat Enjoyment
Due to its soft texture and complex 44% vol, Hendrick's is one of the few gins that can be enjoyed excellently neat on the rocks to explore the layering of the botanicals at leisure.
