16 different cask types are available to the team at the family-run Hercynian Distilling Co. for their whisky ranges. The oak casks, in various sizes, are largely pre-filled with a wide range of fortified and sweet wines, from Amarone to Marsala to Sauternes. Among others, the bottlings of the Wayfare series, belonging to the ElsBurn brand, benefit from the extraordinary cask variety. Bottled at cask strength for even greater aroma intensity, the Wayfare Edition is the big whisky brother of the mild ElsBurn The Journey.
Originally, the single malts of the series appeared as vintage bottlings, but due to strong demand, they are now released in batches of at least 2,000 bottles. The latest release: ElsBurn Wayfare Batch 002 2021. The Hercynian Single Malt matured for between 4 and 9 years in a balanced composition of fortified and sweet wine casks. 50 percent are Sherry Hogsheads, 50 percent Port, Marsala, Málaga, and Grand Cru Claret Hogsheads. The opulent whisky fills 2,752 bottles with complex notes of berries, speculoos, mocha, raisins, and caramel.
