From the European South to the Harz Mountains:
On a whisky journey with the new Wayfare by ElsBurn

Open-mindedness, a spirit of discovery, and a joy of experimentation characterize passionate travelers and are also characteristics of the Harzer Hammerschmiede. Since 2002, numerous diverse bottlings of the handcrafted Hercynian Single Malt have been released under the brand The Glen Els, known as ElsBurn since 2019. Each of them is a milestone in taste on the journey of the traditionally working Lower Saxon distillery and a guide to its extraordinary whisky diversity. This diversity is based not only on various aging times but also on the large selection of hand-picked oak casks in various sizes, which were previously filled with a wide range of southern and sweet wines.

The newest bottling from the Harz craftsmen, part of the Wayfare series – meaning 'journey' – also benefits from this cask diversity. The similarity in name to The Journey, ElsBurn's cornerstone series, is no coincidence: bottled at cask strength for even more intense aromas, the Wayfare Edition is the big whisky brother of the milder Journey. Originally, the single malts in the series were released as vintage bottlings, now in batches of at least 2,000 bottles.

Like its predecessors, Batch 001 2020 is a fine composition of the different cask types used by the distillers from the Elsbach Valley. The Wayfare distillates matured in selected casks for up to nine years. Sherry Casks account for the largest share at 50 percent. In addition to Port wine casks, the other half consists of casks that were previously filled with Málaga, an Andalusian sweet wine, the French red wine Clairet, and the dessert wine Marsala. The aromas characterizing the newest Wayfare are accordingly enticing. They move in a fruity-malty direction with wonderful notes of bittersweet dark chocolate, buttery-soft caramel, and sparkling orange.
