Gin Sul Dry Gin: Northern German Longing for the South
There are spirits that tell a story before the first drop touches the glass. Gin Sul Dry Gin is one such narrative – a love letter from Hamburg to the rugged beauty of the Portuguese coast. In the Altonaer Spirituosen Manufaktur, one of Germany's smallest and most charming distilleries, this gin is produced with a meticulousness that has become rare in the world of mass production.
At the heart of Gin Sul is "Saudade" – that untranslatable Portuguese feeling of melancholy and longing. Here, Northern German distillation artistry and Mediterranean botanicals merge into a total work of art, housed in the iconic white glazed stoneware bottle to protect the fleeting aromas from light.
Sensory Profile & Aroma – A Journey to Cabo de São Vicente
Color: Crystal Clear in Stone Protection
Although the bottle is opaque, Gin Sul appears absolutely crystal clear and pure in the glass. Its viscosity is moderate; it draws fine, elegant trails on the rim of the glass, indicating excellent distillation and the essential oils of the citrus peels.
Nose (Nosing): The Freshness of the Atlantic
The first nosing is a revelation of freshness. While classic London Dry Gins often start heavy and juniper-laden, Gin Sul greets the nose with a radiant citrus presence. You can practically smell the Portuguese sun:
-
Key note: Fresh, essential lemons, reminiscent of the sun-ripened fruits of the Algarve.
-
The secret: The Cistus (Cistus ladanifer) contributes a resinous, slightly sweet and balsamic note, reminiscent of warm summer days on the cliffs.
-
Base: A subtle, clean juniper forms the solid foundation.
Mouthfeel: Velvety and Soft
At 43% vol, Gin Sul is powerful enough to show character, yet surprisingly soft on the palate. The texture is velvety and almost oily, perfectly buffering the alcohol.
Taste (Palate): Mediterranean Spice
The true complexity unfolds in the taste. The citrus notes are accompanied by a fine herbal spice. Rosemary and a hint of allspice provide structure. The cistus is also the star here: it gives the gin a depth that oscillates between floral, resinous, and spicy. In the background, a slight sweetness resonates, which, however, never compromises the "Dry" character.
Finish: A Hint of the Sea
The finish is long and exceptionally fresh. An elegant citrus note remains, combined with a subtle, dry juniper bitterness. A hint of resin allows the enjoyment to fade out very naturally.
The Recipe – The Secret of the Cistus
The list of botanicals in Gin Sul is deliberately focused to avoid diluting the aromatic signature.
-
Juniper berries: Provide the classic gin structure.
-
Ladanifer Cistus: The centerpiece. This plant emits a sticky resin on hot days, which has been prized in Portugal for centuries. It gives Gin Sul its unmistakable balsamic note.
-
Portuguese Lemons: Huge, highly aromatic fruits from the Algarve, which give the gin its bright top note.
-
Coriander, Rosemary & Allspice: Give the distillate the necessary depth and a Mediterranean spiciness.
-
Cinnamon Cassia: Brings a subtle warmth and roundness to the profile.
Water from the Heath
An often underestimated factor is the water. Gin Sul is reduced to drinking strength with the soft water from the Lüneburg Heath – a Northern German component that contributes to the gin's smoothness.
Vinification & Craft – Distillation in the Copper Pot Still
The Process: Maceration & Vapor Infusion
At Altonaer Spirituosen Manufaktur, a handmade copper still from Arnold Holstein is used. The botanicals are partly macerated and partly processed by vapor infusion (in the gin basket) to avoid destroying the delicate citrus aromas with excessive heat.
The Style: Distilled Gin
Gin Sul is a Distilled Gin of the highest purity. It is distilled only in very small batches of about 100 liters per run. This allows the distiller extremely precise separation of heads, hearts, and tails, which explains the exceptional mildness.
The Stoneware Bottle
The white bottle is not just a design object. Stoneware protects the sensitive distillate much better from UV radiation than glass, which significantly prolongs the preservation of the volatile essential oils of the citrus peels and cistus.
Reviews & Reputation
Although Gin Sul is a niche product, it has won awards worldwide and is considered one of the best German gins.
-
International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC): Regular awards with Gold and "Outstanding".
-
Falstaff Gin-Trophy: Received top ratings for its "unmistakable character and perfect citrus profile" (falstaff.com).
-
World Gin Awards: Multiple awards in the "Contemporary Style Gin" category.
-
Design Awards: Also numerous international awards for the iconic bottle design.
The Perfect Serve – A Piece of Portugal in a Glass
The Classic Gin Sul & Tonic
To avoid overpowering the delicate citrus and resinous notes, the choice of tonic is crucial.
-
Tonic Water: A high-quality, dry Mediterranean Tonic (e.g., Fever-Tree) or a classic Indian Tonic.
-
Garnish: A sprig of fresh rosemary and a lemon zest. The rosemary emphasizes the resinous notes of the cistus, while the zest enhances the freshness.
Mixology Tips
-
Sul Tonic (The Original): Plenty of ice, Gin Sul, tonic water, and a lemon peel twist.
-
Gin Sul Martini: Due to its citrus focus, it works wonderfully with a dash of orange bitters in a classic Martini.
Neat Enjoyment
Due to its enormous mildness, Gin Sul is an excellent gin to drink neat. Try it lightly chilled to experience the ethereal unfolding of the cistus layer by layer.
